   Hey Morgan. The last image is pretty, but I still don’t think it will grab someone’s attention when they’re browsing through a wall of wine bottles at a store. I like the graphic tree image on the first label, though, and the soil samples look cool. Plus, the name of the vineyard really stands out on that label. I like it. But just curious, what happened to that circular graphic on the first round of labels you sent out? That was cool.

   The first label has a Font I prefer over the Second sample, but I like the bedrock layers on the bottom of the 2′nd label better.
   A question no one has asked or answered to my knowledge - if a wine is aged with the usual classic cork and lead foil, is there ever any transferred taste or danger from the lead in the foil - sometimes they do get nasty looking when a fully saturated cork turns them to rust and sticky leakage.
   A dipped wax topper a la some older Ports is used by one of our newer Snake River Valley winemakers. It has the look of volcanic solidity - which may not allow the cork to breathe, but it is elegant and natural in appearance. Bitte Zern, Rawbeen

   Hi Robin– Lead is no longer allowed in foils. Most are now made from a tin or tin composite substance.

   I love wax topped bottles and most research shows that it has little effect on natural oxygen ingress through the cork. However, it is very expensive and time consuming to apply, and it has to be the right type of wax. There are some newer beeswax based ones that are easier to cut (I hate the ones you have to chip away at to get to the cork).

   As for corks though, this is an expense that I will certainly not skimp on! I believe I will be using 54 mm (really long!) natural colored corks from the family estate of the Ganau’s from Sardinia. They have been shown to have a near non-existent level of taint and are absolutely beautiful. They also cost well over a dollar a piece, which is crazy expensive as corks go.

   I like your map label much better. what I assume is an old vine in the other labels is rather ugly, as well as too busy. the maplabel could be improved with fainter design colorwise of the map and some experimentation with different font types. both designs are rather austere and cold, that could be improved with warmer colors.

   Thanks for the update on foils … with lead ‘out’ , there are the many other choices … no on plastic, thin tin …but your Pop’s idea of printing the vintage on each end of the long corks and ‘foiling’ just enough of the top of the bottle to allow one to see the vintage on cellared, laid down bottles was briliant - but probably adds another dimension to the cork cost. Yeegaads.
   I, too, dislike the hard wax one has to make a mess of chipping away to get to the cork, fearing you’ll break the top off the bottle..
   The more I look at the ‘old gnarly vines’ on #1 & #2 - to me, they are almost oriental art and resemble the human body with uplifted arms - I don’t think they look as busy as the map. The geological subtlety of rock layers in #2 are my fave . The foils are rockin’ and groovey - soil and hills or rocks and water waves - musical notes and flow of life. Symbolically strong.

   really like the first two labels, and a fan of the map… and the color scheme ties them together somewhat, but you might consider also deciding on one font for the name, “Bedrock Wine Co” so that they have a bit more uniformity… this would also leave the door open to new variations on the label in the future….

    I prefer the map motif, as did Peter Sichel, unless you can get the vine figure to look less anthropomorphic. The current look reminds me of those tree monsters in the Lord of the Rings…

    If you go with a map, might I suggest an early California map, rather than the obscure no place you show here?

    Hi Terry- thanks for taking a look. The map is actually a map of the Bay Area drawn in 1776 by a Spanish priest– one of the first to be relatively accurate. It was just not drawn on the north to south aspect we expect, but then, they had a hard time figuring out what was up in those days.

    I’m a fan of the first one, Morgan. I like the way the vine divides the label into sections and provides a good place for the vineyard/variety text within the colored bedrock area. That makes the Bedrock Wine Co. brand text stand out more. I like the bedrock coloring (and your samples of the foiling) in the first label better than the more blue and red colors in the second.

    I also like the font choice for the first label best. It’s more elegant than the blockier font on the second label, which I think speaks more to what Bedrock wines will be about.

    Question - is there a reason why you want the roots of the vine to start a bit below the surface of the bedrock, rather than right from the surface? It looks a little odd to me.

    I’m with you that the third one is my least favorite. There’s just too much going on there (or not enough?)

    Hiya Eric– Thanks for the input. I think Kathryn placed the vines rather randomly to get an idea of what it would look like. Like last time, this are pretty rough sketches– not close to final label ideas yet (which is terrifying as I am bottling in less than two months). I really like the idea of showing the vine having equal parts in the soil and air to show balance between the two, so that is what she was trying to achieve. We may tweek the vine a bit as we move forward.

    Ahh yes - you’re on the right track now, after so many years of wandering astray…

    I like the first one - the typeface coomplements the organic nature of the vine quite well.

    Will there be any background color/texture for the air?

    Are you going to include any other unique/quriky attributes to the the label and bottle ala Mollydooker…?

    Adam– though I am glad you are drinking wine in the far east, please god, do not tell me you are drinking Mollydooker. I thought I trained you better than that!! Seriously, this is dark side versus light side stuff. After having almost everyone of their newly released wines I am finding them overpriced, over-alcholic, over-extracted, over-sweet (one of my analysis showed RS over 5 g/l on their top Shiraz), and generally over-done.

    What would Gooseberry Manor do my friend?! We would drink 2005 Joguet Chinon and Guy Larmandier Cramant on the roof and drool over young CK models on the big billboard across Houston St.. That is what the young 209 Mulberry residents would do!

    Happy you think I am headed on the right tract!

    I hope I am not the first one to bring you the tragic news but your former home on Mulberry where many a Pet Wine selections were drunk with good people has been torn down and some monstrosity is being put it its place. A damn shame…

    I like the font and everything about the top sample except I like the strata from the second label more than the base in the top one. I think I would prefer to see the strata more horizontal than curved, but that is a minor item. Phantom Rivers uses a vine not unlike yours, but theirs is much smaller and not the focus of the label.

    This new label looks a bit like Rockford from the Barossa; a cult wine from way back (http://www.nanson.ch/images/Rockford1.jpg) - and given that both names have a “rock” involved, similar labels may raise some well-trained eyebrows…

    Hiya Adam,

    I thank thee for the concern but I think the two labels are pretty different. Yes, they both have a vine, but they are stylized very differently, and its proportion within the label is quite different.

    That said, I do love Rockford wines. The 2002 is particularly delicious right now. Old-school Barossa Shiraz before the sweet and nasties from Greenock Creek, Two Hands, et al. became so loved by a certain wine critic. In the same vein as Rockford, though less so, is Turkey Flat.
