Morgan... I'm very excited to see that you will be trying some Portuguese varietals. I think that the Douro varietals can be made into phenomenal red wines... but I'm very biased :-)

[...] In almost all vineyards pruning is done. At Bedrock we just finished the final bit of Cabernet, typically the last to be pruned in order to prevent fungal diseases such as eutypa and bot canker from spreading in the cool, wet, weather of early to mid-winter. Soon we will start taking out vines from old Block 7 and putting in St. George, 101-14, and 3309 rootstock for the new Zinfandel and test block. [...]

Hi Sam. I would love to know more about the RDD clones, and also a bit more about Graciano. We are putting in rootstock this spring and then planning on field-budding in the fall. This will give me a bit of time to better decide on varietals. What are vigor levels like for Tempranillo and Graciano? My only experience with the former is in head-trained, old vineyards where it tends to put out super long canes and not a huge amount of foliage.

Thanks for taking a look!

I just saw your blog through a Tempranillo RSS feed I subscribe to. If you haven't bought your vines yet you might consider some Graciano in your block as it is tremendous in Rioja and the RDD selection of Tempranillo. I can help you source the wood if you like. The Davis Temp is really weak and not worth your money. I have 5 acres of the RDD planted at elevation in the northen Mayacamas. The selections come from Pesquera and Teo Reyes in the Ribera. Check out the Bokisch Ranch Graciano, I think it is the only example made in the New World.
